We Didn’t Use To Have A Rush For The Army From The Southeast And Then the Southwest’ -Gen Enenche

Former Defence spokesperson Major General John Enenche (Rtd.) has alleged that research demonstrates historically low military enlistment from Nigeria’s Southeast and Southwest regions.

Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Enenche cited extensive academic research to support his claim. “I reviewed 278 books and journals put together, and it came out clear from the beginning—from the early days, about the history of the Nigerian Army. And we didn’t use to have a rush for the army from the southeast and then the southwest. But the highest, as we have from record is actually from the north, and it has still remained. In short, at a point, they had to convince them from the Southeast to join the army. It was a serious conviction,” he said.

The retired general analyzed recent recruitment data showing regional disparities in military applications. Gen. Enenche noted that northern states like Kaduna and Borno recorded thousands of applicants during earlier recruitment exercises despite ongoing conflicts in those regions.

In contrast, southern states experienced significant application declines. He cited specific decreases: Lagos recorded 29 per cent fewer applicants, Rivers State 30 per cent, Delta 38 per cent, with Enugu and Abia showing similar downward trends.
