The assailants forced the passengers to identify themselves before opening fire. “The armed men asked them who they were, and one of them said, ‘We are Hausa,’” Falke explained, describing the terrifying encounter.
Following the attack, Falke and family members embarked on a grueling search for the victims, combing through dense bush for hours. Blood traces and signs of struggle guided them to the location where the attackers had left the bodies. “We found out that the corpses of our brothers had been burnt, and we also found gunshot holes on their bodies,” he added, recalling the grim scene.
Even as the remains were recovered, the reality of Uwaisu’s death did not immediately register with Falke. “I did not even believe that he had died until I carried the corpse in my hands,” he said, conveying the shock and heartbreak of seeing his nephew lifeless.
