Majeed Dahiru, a public affairs analyst and columnist, has revealed that a significant realignment of political forces could have occurred in Rivers State if Governor Siminalayi Fubara had fully leveraged his early opportunities within the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Dahiru explained that strategic missteps by the governor allowed key political actors to remain outside his camp, weakening his influence.
According to Dahiru, “Uche Secondus, Lee Maeba, and other groups would have decamped to the APC together with Fubara”, emphasizing that the governor had a unique window to consolidate power by attracting prominent figures from opposition and allied factions. He noted that national and state-level political leaders were prepared to rally behind Fubara, creating an unprecedented opportunity for the APC to strengthen its position in Rivers State.
Dahiru explained that the failure to mobilize these groups was partly due to inadequate political strategy and a lack of decisive leadership from Fubara. While the party hierarchy had positioned him to become a unifying figure, his hesitation and tactical errors allowed rival interests to retain their allegiance elsewhere, prolonging the political crisis and limiting the governor’s ability to control the narrative.
The analyst also highlighted that the presence of influential actors like Uche Secondus, a former national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, and former senator Lee Maeba, represented a potential seismic shift in Rivers politics. Their collective defection to the APC could have significantly weakened opposition structures and created a stronger platform for governance and party cohesion.
Dahiru further warned that the governor’s failure to seize this moment reflects broader challenges in Nigerian politics, where windows of opportunity are often short-lived and miscalculations can have long-term consequences. He stressed that Fubara’s inaction has emboldened rivals and complicated efforts to stabilize the political environment in the state.
He concluded that political success in Rivers State, and Nigeria at large, requires not just formal authority but strategic foresight, alliance-building, and the ability to act decisively when opportunity presents itself. According to Dahiru, Fubara’s missed chances offer a cautionary tale for other political leaders navigating similar high-stakes environments
