Following the recent decision by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over religious freedom violations, American Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has publicly called on President Trump to authorize military assistance to Nigeria. The senator made this appeal while describing the ongoing violence in the country as a “religious genocide” targeting Christian communities.
In a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Senator Graham condemned what he termed systematic attacks on Christians by Boko Haram and other extremist groups, asserting that these organizations pose a threat not only to Africa but to the entire world. He characterized the situation as a humanitarian catastrophe, stating that the “level of depravity and barbaric behavior” seen in Nigeria was beyond comprehension.
“I hope President Trump will provide military assistance to prevent the further slaughter of Christians in Nigeria. This is religious genocide. Boko Haram and other radical Islamic groups in the region pose a threat to humanity, not just to Africa. The level of barbaric behavior is beyond description,” Graham wrote. He further added that President Trump could “serve the world well by protecting the innocent from uncontrolled violence,” calling the move “a worthy cause for our men and women in uniform.”
Senator Graham emphasized that with several years left in President Trump’s term, there remained a window of opportunity for his administration to take meaningful action in defending persecuted Christians across the world. He described potential U.S. intervention in Nigeria as not only a strategic decision but also a moral obligation aligned with America’s global leadership role. According to him, military assistance would demonstrate the United States’ commitment to protecting human rights and standing against extremist violence that continues to destabilize regions in Africa.
