Public Affairs Analyst and legal practitioner, Barrister Darlington Agomuo has criticised security agencies and relevant authorities for what he described as persistent inaction in the face of repeated inflammatory statements by certain individuals, warning that such negligence could have grave consequences.
Speaking during an interview on Voice of the People (VOP) TV, Agomuo expressed concern that dangerous utterances have continued unchecked, despite being made publicly on several occasions. According to him, the failure of the authorities to respond decisively sends the wrong signal and emboldens individuals who thrive on making reckless comments capable of threatening public peace.
“This is not the first time this man is saying this type of thing, yet nobody pays attention to him. Not even to arrest him or neutralize him,” Agomuo said during the programme.
The public affairs analyst noted that in a country already grappling with insecurity, hate speech and incitement, repeated threats or provocative statements should not be treated lightly. He argued that silence or inaction by law enforcement agencies could be interpreted as tolerance, thereby encouraging a cycle of impunity.
Agomuo stressed that Nigeria’s laws are clear on issues bordering on incitement, threats to national security and public order, adding that enforcement remains the major challenge. He questioned why individuals who repeatedly make controversial or dangerous statements are allowed to continue without interrogation or legal consequences.
According to him, proactive policing and intelligence-led interventions are crucial in preventing crises before they escalate. He maintained that arresting or questioning such individuals does not amount to suppression of free speech, but rather a lawful step to protect lives and property.
