Alexander Von Rugen, a global affairs analyst, has stated that Nigeria shares borders with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, and Boko Haram terrorists have been moving across those borders for years. He said following President Donald Trump’s recent threat to send American troops to Nigeria, many of these terrorists have been fleeing from Nigeria into neighboring countries to hide.
In an interview with News Central TV, Rugen stated that African Union need to cooperate with the USA to effectively handle the issue of Boko Haram. He said Cameroon is already working with the United States in the fight against Boko Haram. He said about 300 American soldiers are currently in Cameroon, training Cameroonian forces, gathering intelligence, and using US technology to combat terrorism.
In Rugen’s words: “This is not just a Nigerian problem, you have got borders with Niger, Chad and Cameroon and Boko Haram have been moving across those borders. I am sure a lot of them are running across these borders right now with this threat coming from America. So it is going to need AU cooperation in dealing with. I might add also that Cameroon is already cooperating with America. There is about 300 US forces on the ground in Cameroon specifically to train Cameroonian soldiers to deal with Boko Haram and to gather intel and use US technology in dealing with them”
