Former Nigerian lawmaker and human rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani has criticised United States President Donald Trump over what he described as disrespectful comments and policies directed at Nigeria and South Africa.
Sani made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) while reacting to Trump’s reported description of Nigeria as a “disgraced country” and his repeated criticism of South Africa over alleged marginalisation of white citizens.
In the tweet, Sani contrasted the responses of both African countries to Trump’s actions and rhetoric. “He insulted South Africa, they stood up to him. He slammed series of visa restrictions on Nigeria, but spared South Africa,” the former senator wrote, suggesting a disparity in how Washington treated Africa’s two biggest economies.
Trump has in the past accused South Africa of discriminatory policies against white farmers, claims which the South African government has consistently rejected, insisting that its land reform programme is constitutional and aimed at correcting historical injustices. Pretoria has also openly challenged such narratives, defending its sovereignty and domestic policies on international platforms.
Sani’s reaction, however, focused largely on Nigeria’s response to what he implied was unfair treatment. According to him, despite Nigeria facing sweeping visa restrictions and harsh language, the country did not push back with the same firmness displayed by South Africa.
Political analysts say Sani’s comments reflect growing frustration among Nigerians over how the country is perceived globally and how its leaders respond to international criticism. Nigeria has faced increased scrutiny in recent years over security challenges, migration concerns and governance issues, factors that have influenced foreign policy decisions by Western nations.
