In a recent interview shared by Arise News, the President of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, has weighed in on the political realignment following the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dr. Alaye described the governor’s decision as a strategic move aimed at restoring peace, political stability, and effective governance in Rivers State after months of intense political tension. According to him, the state has experienced prolonged instability since the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, a situation that negatively affected governance and service delivery.
He noted that Governor Fubara’s alignment with the ruling party at the federal level has already begun to reshape the political landscape in the state. Speaking on the growing wave of political adjustments, Dr. Alaye stated, “Those that were even former governors of Rivers State that are in PDP, as a result of Governor Siminalayi moving to the APC, they are also now trying to align themselves with the APC.”
The Ijaw leader argued that the development reflects a broader acceptance of the governor’s decision by key political stakeholders across party lines. He maintained that many political figures understand the importance of unity and cooperation with the federal government in driving development and sustaining peace in the oil-rich state.
Dr. Alaye further emphasized that the primary responsibility of the governor is to ensure stability and deliver dividends of democracy to the people, adding that any political move that promotes these objectives should be supported. He expressed confidence that the unfolding realignments would strengthen governance and foster long-term development in Rivers State.
