Lere Olayinka, a senior political aide has reacted sharply to the reported joint military operation between Nigeria and the United States, suggesting that some political actors may have misjudged the intentions of the US government. The reaction came amid widespread discussion following comments credited to US President Donald Trump about American involvement in strikes against terrorist groups in northwest Nigeria.
The operation, which reportedly took place on Christmas Day, involved Nigerian security forces working alongside the United States Africa Command. According to official information, airstrikes were carried out against terrorist camps linked to ISIS in parts of Sokoto and Zamfara states. Nigerian authorities confirmed that the action was part of an existing security partnership focused on intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism efforts, stressing that Nigeria’s sovereignty was respected.
In a post via X, Lere Olayinka, who serves as a spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Minister, offered a blunt interpretation of the situation. He suggested that some individuals may have believed that the involvement of the United States would lead to political change rather than a security operation.
Olayinka stated that their expectation was probably that Trump would help them come and overthrow Tinubu, adding that such people must now be shocked by the outcome.
In his words, “Their expectation was probably that Trump would help them, to come and overthrow President Tinubu. They must be shocked now.”
