Former presidential contender and activist Omoyele Sowore has weighed in on reports about a recent road crash involving world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua, describing the incident as a stark reminder of deep-rooted failures in Nigeria’s systems. Sowore shared his views in a post on X on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
He warned against making light of the situation or reacting with celebration, stressing that the incident was a serious tragedy. Sowore noted that although Joshua survived the crash, others were not as fortunate, pointing out that some of the boxer’s associates, and possibly the driver, lost their lives. He emphasized that these deaths should not be overshadowed simply because a famous figure survived.
Acknowledging Joshua’s international status, Sowore explained that the accident naturally drew widespread attention. However, he argued that the focus should go beyond celebrity interest and prompt deeper reflection on collective responsibility and national shortcomings.
According to him, the crash reflects a broader and recurring problem, describing such incidents as part of the everyday reality in a country that has struggled with effective governance at multiple levels. He criticized the state of emergency and rescue services, saying basic support such as first aid is often unavailable at accident scenes.
Sowore highlighted the lack of essential infrastructure, including functional ambulances, stretchers, and air rescue services, adding that many lives are lost not only because of accidents but due to institutional failure and neglect.
He tied these concerns to a wider call for change, urging sustained efforts toward rebuilding the country on principles of competence, respect for human dignity, and the protection of life.
The activist also recalled a past conversation with Anthony Joshua, during which he warned the boxer about associating with what he described as failed leadership in Nigeria. Sowore said the advice was unpopular at the time but believes subsequent events have proven its relevance.
He again encouraged Joshua to distance himself from leaders he sees as responsible for the nation’s decline, arguing that influential figures should not legitimize ineffective systems.
Sowore concluded by offering condolences to the families of those who died in the accident, stressing that their lives were valuable and that they deserved better than what the current system delivered.
