Kenneth Okonkwo has criticized President Bola Tinubu for the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, claiming it has worsened during his administration. He noted that with nearly three years in office, it is evident that the President lacks a solid strategy to address the nation’s security challenges.
According to a report from Sun Nigeria on November 30, 2025, Okonkwo highlighted a recent surge of violence in various states, including the murder of a Brigadier General and his team in Borno, and the abduction of students, religious worshippers, farmers, and villagers in Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, Sokoto, and Niger States. He emphasized that Nigeria has never faced insecurity of this magnitude.
He also referenced a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump, who indicated he might send American troops to protect Nigerians if the violence did not cease. Okonkwo stated that this warning shook President Tinubu so significantly that he canceled international trips for the first time, a departure from his usual response to major attacks.
Okonkwo criticized the government’s tactic of negotiating with terrorists to secure the release of kidnap victims, arguing that it only exacerbates the problem. He condemned the decision to remove security details from VIPs rather than enhancing the capabilities of the country’s security agencies.
He proposed the establishment of state police forces as a genuine solution, arguing this would increase the number of trained officers and enable quicker responses due to their local knowledge.
Okonkwo asserted that without constitutional amendments to allow state police, insecurity would continue to deteriorate despite political assurances.
He remarked, “The threat shook Tinubu to his core and for the first time, he feigned empathy.
