The Same Wike Who Went To Mr. President To Seek Support Against Fubara; That Influence Is Over-Aigbe

In a recent interview shared by News Central TV, political affairs analyst Austin Aigbe has offered a pointed assessment of the shifting power dynamics in Rivers State politics, particularly following Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Aigbe, the political influence once wielded by former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has significantly diminished. He argued that Governor Fubara’s growing political stature, coupled with his acceptance within the APC at the national level, has altered the balance of power in the state.

Aigbe noted that political authority in Rivers State has increasingly shifted toward the incumbent governor, who now enjoys broader legitimacy and access at the centre. He emphasized that the traditional leverage previously exercised by Wike no longer carries the same weight in national decision-making circles.

“The same Wike who could go straight to Mr. President to seek any form of support to deal with Governor Fubara—that influence is over.”

The analyst explained that Governor Fubara’s position as the sitting governor naturally confers greater political relevance, especially within a ruling party seeking electoral consolidation ahead of 2027. He added that political actors tend to gravitate toward incumbents who control state machinery and command popular support.

Aigbe also highlighted that the evolving political reality reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics, where power is often recalibrated based on access, party alignment, and strategic necessity.

He concluded that Rivers State has entered a new phase of political leadership, one in which influence is no longer determined by past authority but by present relevance and institutional control.
