“The Role Of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, As Areago Of Egbaland, Will Be Closely Observed-Showunmi

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Friday, March 27, 2026, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State and leader of The Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, has cautioned against any effort to impose a governorship candidate on the state as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin.

He stated that such an attempt would be strongly opposed by the Egba people in the Ogun Central Senatorial District, who he said would not accept decisions taken without their involvement.

Showunmi emphasized that no matter the extent of influence or participation by President Bola Tinubu in the political process, it remains necessary to engage key stakeholders across the senatorial district before endorsing any aspirant.

He maintained that consultation is a fundamental part of the political process and should not be overlooked in decisions concerning leadership selection.

He also expressed concern over reports of a recent visit by the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, to certain traditional rulers within the state.

According to him, the visit did not include engagement with recognized traditional institutions in Egbaland, a development he described as troubling in the context of existing political dynamics.

Showunmi suggested that the move could be viewed as an attempt to diminish the influence of the Egba people in shaping the leadership direction of the state.

He pointed out that traditional institutions play a vital role in maintaining balance and inclusiveness in political matters, and any action perceived to sideline them could generate tension.

The PDP chieftain made these remarks in a statement released to mark the 39th Lisabi Festival, an event that holds cultural and historical significance for the Egba people.

He used the occasion to reiterate the importance of unity, fairness, and mutual respect in political decision-making processes within the state.

He further argued that any political arrangement that appears to concentrate power within a particular area for an extended period could disrupt the balance that has helped sustain stability in Ogun State.

According to him, maintaining equity among the various regions is essential to preserving harmony and preventing discontent.

Showunmi insisted that broad consultation among stakeholders must guide the emergence of the 2027 governorship candidate, adding that legitimacy in leadership comes from collective agreement rather than unilateral decisions.

“The role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Areago of Egbaland, will be closely observed. Consultation is not a courtesy but a necessity. Egba people cannot accept decisions imposed without their input regarding the leadership of Ogun State,” he said……See More
