In a video posted on Facebook, Kalabari chieftain Asari Dokubo voiced strong displeasure over claims that the Quran instructs Muslims to kill unbelievers. He argued that such assertions are misleading and misrepresent the teachings of Islam. He stated that the scripture only permits Muslims to confront those who attack them and to pursue aggressors in the same measure, emphasising that these directives are rooted in self-defence rather than unprovoked violence.
Dokubo further stressed that his position is informed by a thorough personal study of the Quran. He said he has read the holy book from beginning to end and found no passage commanding Muslims to kill people of other faiths.
According to him, “The Quran says, ‘attack them wherever they attack you, and chase them out wherever they chase you out,’ and every law allows you to defend yourself. Every society in its laws allows individuals to defend themselves; that is the bottom line. Every human has the right to life; no other human being has the right to take another person’s life. There is nowhere in the Quran where the Quran says go and kill unbelievers. I have read the Quran cover to cover and I have read the Bible cover to cover.”
