An Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has argued that claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria are illogical given that Christians hold top positions within the country’s security leadership.

Speaking during an interview with Daily Trust, Sheikh Gumi questioned the narrative being promoted by foreign powers. “I don’t think it’s the government that will tell Trump that there is a Christian genocide, which there is none. Today now, the Minister of Defence is a Christian. The Chief of Defence Staff is a Christian. Will they be killing Christians? So it’s not the government that does—in fact, even the recent bombardments, I don’t think it’s the government that invited them. They forced themselves,” he said.

The cleric accused U.S. President Donald Trump of using the genocide claim as a pretext for intervention. “And even from the pronouncement of Trump, you know that he has a religious prejudice. In fact, you see what happens in America itself, whereby those who are immigrants are really facing his wrath now. We can understand then. This man has some ulterior motives when he declares that Nigeria—there’s a Christian genocide—and to use that as a smokescreen to attack us,” he stated.
