A report from The Nation News states that on December 29, 2025, Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), explained why alliance talks with other political parties have fallen through. Adebayo highlighted that key proponents of the merger lack the integrity, ideological coherence, and ethical grounding necessary for leading a national recovery. While he indicated that the SDP is not against political alliances, he stressed that they will not partner with individuals of questionable character or those whose past actions clash with the party’s core values.
During an event in Akure, which he attended with his wife, Queen Lilian, Adebayo argued that merely opposing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not justify a united front. He emphasized that a successful coalition must be grounded in a common vision that effectively benefits the public.
He pointed out that his frustration with the current administration does not mean he is willing to support other candidates who share the same flaws he criticizes in Tinubu. Adebayo mentioned that various politicians who sought to join or collaborate with his party were rejected during their internal evaluations. He characterized some of these individuals as opportunistic, attempting to leverage public discontent instead of offering real solutions.
Adebayo warned that many opposition members are merely looking to regain access to governmental advantages, suggesting that the current political choices available do not truly serve the people. He cautioned Nigerians to be wary of those with dubious backgrounds, some of whom face legal challenges or corruption accusations, positioning themselves as potential leaders. He reiterated that authentic reform cannot be based on criminality or political expediency.
He stated, “Being angry with President Tinubu doesn’t mean I’m oblivious. How can I claim he is incapable of governance due to his shortcomings and then ally with someone who is just like him?” Adebayo asserted that any credible alliance must first involve participants acknowledging their contributions to the country’s existing issues. He remarked that many politicians depend on public office for their livelihoods, contrasting this with his belief that remaining out of power is preferable to betraying the faith of the citizens by holding office.
