The Elders Are Talking,The FCT Minister Is Not Listening And The Governor Is Not Listening —Ikoawaji

A member of the Rivers Elders Forum, Chief Asukewe Ikoawaji, has spoken on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, calling on major political actors involved to reflect on their actions amid rising tensions. Ikoawaji made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Speaking on the standoff involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the Governor of Rivers State, Ikoawaji said both leaders bear responsibility for the current situation. According to him, “The FCT minister at this point needs to work on himself. The governor at this time needs to work on himself.” He explained that the intervention of elders in the matter became necessary because of the inability of the parties involved to reach an understanding.

He stated, “The elders come into this matter because they refuse to understand themselves.” Ikoawaji added that despite efforts by elders to intervene, their counsel has not been heeded. He said, “The elders are talking. The FCT minister is not listening. The governor is not listening.” He reiterated his position, stressing, “So, they need to work on themselves. And that is why I’m not missing any word.”

The Rivers Elders Forum member also issued a warning ahead of the 2027 general elections, linking future political alignments to the ongoing dispute. He said, “If anybody says that in 2027, he’s going to support any candidate any of these people bring, that person will become an enemy of River’s people.” He noted that political conflicts are not permanent, adding, “Because problems come and go.”

In his remarks, Ikoawaji highlighted the political affiliations of key figures and institutions within the state. He said, “Wike is working for Mr. President. Fubara is in APC now. Also working for Mr. President.” He further stated, “Members of River State House of Assembly, to a greater percentage, are in APC.”

Continuing, he said local and federal political structures in the state largely align under the same party, noting, “Local government chairman in River State, the majority are in APC. House of Rep members, most of them are in APC.” Based on this alignment, he questioned the basis of the prolonged conflict, stating, “That said, they are in the same family. And if you’re in the same family, does it call for all this?”

Ikoawaji also made remarks on the conduct of political party leaders, suggesting a lack of adherence to party guidelines. Addressing viewers directly, he said, “But let me tell you, my sisters, most of these leaders of political parties don’t even read their constitution.
