The Colonial Constitution Didn’t Say Nigerians Should Stop Being Muslims And Christians- Baba-Ahmed

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has emphasized the importance of religious tolerance and mutual respect in sustaining peace and unity in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed noted that the country’s colonial constitution was not designed to eliminate or suppress religious beliefs but rather to promote coexistence among people of different faiths.

He explained that Nigeria’s secular nature does not mean citizens should abandon their religions or spiritual practices, but that governance should remain neutral in matters of faith. According to him, maintaining a balance between religion and national values is key to fostering peace, equity, and progress in a diverse society like Nigeria.

Baba-Ahmed stressed that the country’s strength lies in the ability of its citizens—whether Christians, Muslims, or adherents of other religions—to live harmoniously while practicing their faiths.

In his words, “The colonial constitution didn’t say that Nigerians should forfeit their faiths. It didn’t say that we should stop being Christians or Muslims. What it says is that we are a secular country, and the foundation for peace, equity, and progress lies in sustaining a nation of faithful people. People of faith who should live together.
