Former presidential candidate and human rights campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, responded to the alleged attempted arrest of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, as reported on X on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
Shortly after the incident gained public attention, Sowore stated his stance in a tweet on his official social media account. “Crying shame, Tinubu must release @elrufai’s passport now,” he said in a short statement.
A graphic post followed Sowore’s description of the events surrounding El-encounter Rufai’s with security officers at the airport. Reports that security personnel tried to apprehend El-Rufai upon his arrival in Abuja on Egypt Air flight MS 877 from Cairo sparked Sowore’s response. The Punch reports that earlier, El-Rufai’s attorney claimed that officers from the Department of State Services attempted to arrest him without producing a warrant or any official paperwork.
Additionally, the legal team asserted that El-international Rufai’s passport was confiscated during the incident. The incident involving El-Rufai has continued to spark reactions from politicians and observers, with demands that constitutional norms and due process be followed. As of the time of this report, security organizations have not released a formal response to the charges.
According to El-legal Rufai’s reps, he had previously expressed his readiness to accept an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. They said he had planned to make an appearance before the commission on Monday, February 16, 2026.Discover . More
