The shock 0-0 result between Zimbabwe and South Africa has stirred controversy after Nigerian media figure Femi Oguntayo described it as a deliberate tactic by Bafana Bafana.
According to Oguntayo, the draw was “a trap,” suggesting the South African side avoided collecting six points against bottom-placed Zimbabwe to guard against implications of CAF’s “Eritrea rule.”
Oguntayo explained: “South Africa knows exactly what they are doing. It’s a trap. They don’t want to gather 6 points against last-placed Zimbabwe in case the Eritrea rule applies on the last day.”
He added: “If we beat Benin and they beat Rwanda. They qualify even with [the points deducted from them].”
The “Eritrea Rule” comes into play because Eritrea’s exit from one group left an uneven number of teams across CAF groups, leading to result comparisons that discount matches against bottom teams in larger groups.
South Africa now must win their final match against Rwanda to preserve their qualification chances, while hoping for favorable outcomes elsewhere.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
