Former Operation Safe Haven Commander General Anthony Atolagbe has suggested that the advanced weaponry used by the United States in recent strikes against terrorists in Sokoto State likely involves financial arrangements with the Nigerian government.
In an interview with Channels TV, General Atolagbe explained that such military operations typically involve confidential agreements between governments. “There are measures that are taken by governments to see how some of these things are secured. Some areas of other agreements with the Americans may not be made public. It’s left to the government to decide on how and when they will be able to reimburse or to repay,” he said.
The retired general highlighted the sophisticated and costly nature of the weapons deployed in the operation. “Because we’re not talking just about the Tomahawks, the MQ-9 was also used by the US. The MQ-9 is the Reaper. The drone. It’s just one big drone that has one formidable capacity. It flies almost 1,000 miles away without refueling. So it’s made to have that level of capability,” he explained.
General Atolagbe indicated that more strikes are expected and suggested that their effectiveness will help determine whether Nigeria could have achieved similar results independently. “This is just the beginning, as we are told. So there are other strikes that will likely come. And then when we see the intensity and then we see the devastation, we’ll be able to say, ‘Perhaps we would have been able to achieve this,’ or ‘It is with the support of the Americans that we are able to get to this point,” he stated.
He stated categorically that operational security requires the United States to maintain discretion about future military actions, noting it would not be appropriate for American forces to reveal their intentions or disclose where subsequent strikes will occur.
