Shehu Sani Reacts As Obasanjo Says He Never Asked The National Assembly For A Third Term

Former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has injected a new twist into the long-standing controversy surrounding the alleged third-term bid of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a tweet on Monday, September 22, 2025, Sani stated that the only person alive who can definitively confirm or deny the allegations of bribery used to manipulate the constitution is none other than Senator Ken Nnamani, the man who served as Senate President at the time.

Senator Sani said, “The only credible person alive who can confirm or deny that the members of the National Assembly have been ‘bribed’ to alter with the constitution and allow for ‘the third term’ tenure extension for Obasanjo is non other than Senator Ken Nnamani, the then Senate President.”

Sani’s tweet came just days after Obasanjo himself publicly denied ever pursuing a third-term agenda.

Speaking at a democracy dialogue in Accra, Obasanjo insisted that there was no credible evidence to support the claims, which have dogged his legacy for nearly two decades.

He maintained that achieving debt relief for Nigeria during his administration was a far more difficult task than securing a tenure extension would have been, and that if he had genuinely desired it, he would have succeeded.

However, Sani’s statement shifts the spotlight directly onto Senator Nnamani, who presided over the Senate when the constitutional amendment bill was brought before the National Assembly.

Nnamani’s leadership during that period is widely credited with the bill’s eventual defeat.

By naming him as the sole credible witness, Sani has effectively challenged both Obasanjo’s denial and the historical record, suggesting that the full truth of the matter remains hidden. See, More, Here>>>>
