Shehu Sani Reacts After Shettima Request A Permanent Seat For Nigeria At The UN Security Council

Former Kaduna Central Senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani has reacted to Vice President Kashim Shettima’s call for Nigeria to be granted a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Shettima made the appeal while representing Nigeria at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the Vice President highlighted Nigeria’s significant contributions to global peacekeeping, regional stability, and its longstanding commitment to international cooperation as reasons the country deserves a permanent seat.

Nigeria has consistently advocated for reforms at the UN, particularly around the composition of the Security Council, which currently has five permanent members with veto power.

Shettima argued that including Nigeria as a permanent member would reflect the evolving geopolitical landscape and recognize Africa’s role in global affairs.

However, Shehu Sani responded critically to the idea. Posting on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the former senator suggested that if the UN chooses not to grant the seat to any of the continent’s major powers — Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, or Ethiopia — then Rwanda would be a better choice.

He praised Rwanda as a stable, organized, and progressive nation, implying it may be more deserving based on governance and internal stability.

Sani’s post reads:

“If the UN decides to give one slot to an African country at the UN Security Council permanent table, and doesn’t want to give it to any of the bigger countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt or Ethiopia, they should just give it to Rwanda. Rwanda is stable, organized and progressive. #UNGA80”
