A former senator and influential member of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Shehu Sani, has reacted to recent remarks credited to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, about Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The reaction followed a media report that drew public attention to comments made by President Trump during a public appearance, in which he spoke about the Nigerian First Lady.
Senator Sani shared his response through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, February 5, 2026, adding his voice to the growing public conversation around the statement.
According to News Central TV, President Trump made reference to Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s religious role, describing her as a pastor in what he identified as the largest church in Nigeria.
While speaking, the US President reportedly praised her personality and standing, saying, “A very respected woman. Thank you very much. It’s a great honour.”
The remarks quickly gained traction online and across news platforms, with many Nigerians expressing surprise at the tone of admiration coming from a leader known for his often blunt and critical views on foreign countries.
Observers noted that the comments stood out as unusually positive, particularly within the broader context of US–Nigeria relations.
Reacting to the report, Senator Shehu Sani suggested that the statement represented more than a casual compliment. In his post on X, he interpreted President Trump’s words as a sign of growing international respect for Nigeria’s leadership, especially the office of the First Lady.
In his words, Senator Sani wrote: “The First Lady has gotten public recognition and respect from President Trump. A hardened stance on the country is now softening. Courtesy of adept diplomatic engagement. We hope for the best.”
The former lawmaker’s reaction framed the development as a potential diplomatic milestone, implying that behind-the-scenes engagement by Nigerian officials may be yielding positive results.
