During a SYMFONI interview, Dr. Akin Fapohunda, Director of Research for the Afenifere Group, provided insight into the unfolding political crisis in Rivers State. He traced the tension between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike to financial obligations and longstanding agreements.
“Fubara became frightened of paying huge sums continuously to maintain influence, yet Wike insisted agreements be honored—this tension has driven the current political debacle in Rivers State,” Dr. Fapohunda explained, highlighting the financial undercurrents that have shaped political maneuvering in the state.
He noted that Rivers State has historically been a hub of considerable political funding, where agreements between powerful political actors dictate access to influence and office. Fapohunda emphasized that these financial arrangements often determine the stability or volatility of governance.
According to Dr. Fapohunda, Fubara’s hesitation to continue payments created friction, as Wike’s insistence on honoring prior commitments forced a confrontation between the two leaders. The struggle, he noted, illustrates how money remains central to political power in Nigeria.
The scholar pointed out that the situation is not unique to Rivers State. Across Nigeria, political agreements backed by financial leverage often supersede formal governance procedures, creating environments where personal interests can dominate state priorities.
