Rivers Assembly Speaker Amaewhule Survived Kidnap, Torture, And Assassination Plots

According to report by The Nation on Monday, September 29, 2025, Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Martin Amaewhule, has reflected on his survival from multiple threats to his life, including kidnapping and assassination attempts, attributing his safety to divine intervention.

He spoke during a thanksgiving service marking his 52nd birthday at the All Saints Anglican Church, Eliozu, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Amaewhule said his celebration was not just about adding another year but about acknowledging God’s protection. “I am not just marking another birthday but acknowledging that many people had planned to take my life in the last one year, but God didn’t allow them,” he told the congregation.

Recalling a traumatic episode from 2008, the Speaker narrated how he narrowly escaped death after being abducted at his home shortly after attending church.

According to him, some of his abductors had even sat through the service before trailing him. “Some of you were here in 2008 when a preacher was preaching right here on a Sunday service. On that faithful day, I didn’t know the people who came to kidnap me were also in the service,” he recounted.

He explained that the gunmen ambushed him as he arrived at his residence, overpowered his security guard, and whisked him away to a forest.

Amaewhule revealed that he was held hostage for five days, subjected to harsh treatment and maltreatment.

“They tactically followed me to my residence, tied up my security guard and abducted me… They placed thorns under my feet and inflicted several injuries on my head and body in the process of moving me from one hideout to another within the forest. They fed me with biscuits throughout the period even as I almost bled to death,” he recalled.
