Reno Omokri, a former aide to the presidency, has called out Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, over what he describes as contradictions between the politician’s public stance against corruption and his recent associations with controversial individuals. Omokri made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday, questioning how a man who once vowed to stay away from questionable structures now appears comfortable in their company.
Omokri pointed to what he sees as a growing gap between the image Obi built during his years as governor of Anambra State and the political relationships he now maintains. According to Omokri, Obi rose to national prominence largely on the back of a message rooted in transparency, accountability, and the rejection of corrupt practices. That message resonated deeply during the 2023 election cycle, drawing millions of supporters who believed he represented a clean break from the old order of Nigerian politics.
The former presidential aide argued that by aligning with figures whose reputations have attracted public criticism, Obi risks eroding the very foundation that made his political brand appealing. Omokri suggested that voters do not only evaluate politicians by what they say but also by the people they choose to stand beside. In his view, any perceived compromise on that front weakens a candidate’s credibility, no matter how strong the original message may have been.
Omokri did not hold back in making the point personal. He reminded his audience of a specific declaration Obi had made in the past, closing his post with a direct challenge.
“And this is the same Peter Obi who said he would not be part of any ‘structures of criminality’?” Omokri wrote.
The exchange comes against the backdrop of an increasingly charged political atmosphere in Nigeria, where alliances shift frequently and public trust in political figures remains fragile. Obi’s supporters have consistently held him to a higher standard than most politicians, which means any perceived inconsistency attracts sharper scrutiny than it might for others.
Reactions on social media were divided. Some users agreed with Omokri, arguing that Obi needs to be held to the same standards he set for himself. Others dismissed the criticism as politically motivated, accusing Omokri of working to discredit Obi on behalf of rival interests. The debate quickly gained traction across multiple platforms….See More
