According to a report by Daily Post, on Tuesday February 10, 2026, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has declared nationwide protests against the Nigerian Senate’s plan to amend the Electoral Act.
The amendment could weaken the electronic transmission of election results, a key tool for transparency, the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, said the Senate’s action is retrogressive.
He warned that it could undo progress made in strengthening democracy in Nigeria and explained that the amendment threatens efforts to make elections more transparent and credible.
Mohammed said reducing safeguards for electronic transmission of results comes at a time when trust in electoral institutions is low and added that Nigerians see this move as an attempt to reopen the door to election manipulation.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement expressed solidarity with civil society and governance organizations that oppose the Senate’s plan, these groups include the Centre for Democracy and Development, the Kukah Centre, and the International Press Centre.
They have all urged the Senate to follow the House of Representatives’ support for real-time electronic transmission of election results, Mohammed stated that this issue is not about politics. He described it as a national democratic priority.
He praised Nigerians from all walks of life who have continued to protest peacefully and acknowledged the contributions of civil society groups, professional bodies, opposition parties, the Obidient Movement, youth-led organizations, and other pro-democracy platforms.
“Real-time electronic transmission of results is no longer optional; it is a minimum democratic standard,” he said.
