Nigerian former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has faulted U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statement that Christianity is under an “existential threat” in Nigeria. The senator described Trump’s position as false and divisive, insisting that the country’s security crisis affects citizens of all faiths.
President Trump had announced the inclusion of Nigeria on the United States’ “Countries of Particular Concern” list, alleging that radical Islamist groups were behind widespread killings of Christians. In response, Sani said such claims misrepresent the reality on the ground and are based on misinformation spread by individuals seeking to paint Nigeria in a negative light.
He emphasized that the ongoing wave of terror and banditry has targeted both Muslims and Christians for over a decade. According to him, religion has never been the defining factor in the violence ravaging different regions of the country. In his words, “Muslims have actually suffered more and recorded more casualties because of the areas those evil terrorists operate.”
The former senator noted that both mosques and churches have come under attack, while imams and pastors alike have been victims of abductions and killings. He pointed to reports from the U.S. envoy in Nigeria, which, he said, confirm that the situation is far more complex than what is being presented in Washington.
Sani also criticized a U.S. legislative proposal aimed at sanctioning those who enforce Sharia or blasphemy laws, arguing that such actions amount to interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs. He maintained that every sovereign nation has the right to determine its legal and religious systems without external influence.
He urged the United States to offer constructive support to Nigeria in tackling terrorism rather than making declarations that could fuel division. Sani further cautioned Nigerians who spread false narratives abroad for political advantage, saying their actions damage the nation’s image.
He expressed confidence that despite the current challenges, Nigeria will eventually triumph over insecurity and emerge stronger.
