There have been several reactions from the general public and particularly social media users after the former governor of Anambra State and erstwhile Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi commented on the debt forgiven the NNPCL by President Tinubu’s government. According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he pointed out that the forgiveness was financial recklessness.
Many were left stunned after it was announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) was forgiven debts running into trillions of naira by the president Tinubu’s administration.
The announcement, which garnered widespread traction across various social media platforms, drew mixed reactions. While many commended the move, others believed the debt forgiveness was unacceptable.
Reacting, Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate in a recent statement which was shared on his official X handle, pointed out that the debt forgiveness was financial recklessness.
It can be recalled that the NNPCL was said to have owed N5.57 trillion and N1.42 trillion which added up to a whooping N8 trillion, a debt which was waved away by the president Tinubu’s administration.
According to his statements, the ADC Chieftain lamented that the debt forgiveness which came after the company announced profits was alarming. The forgiven debt, according to Peter Obi could have been used to finance the 2026 budget.
He further accused the NNPCL, which has the president as it’s minister of mismanagement and toying with the patience of Nigerians.
