The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohondare Jimoh, has issued a strong warning to activists, including human rights campaigner Omoyele Sowore, and other groups planning to stage protests in Lagos, urging them to desist from actions capable of disrupting public peace.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Jimoh emphasized that while Nigerians have the right to freedom of expression and movement, such rights must not be exercised in ways that infringe on the rights of others or threaten public order. “Every Nigerian is entitled to protection, is entitled to safety, is entitled to freedom of movement, is entitled to freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is clearly one of the essentials of democracy which they are enjoying. But criminalities will not be condoned,” he said.
He warned that any individual or group attempting to hide under the guise of protests to cause chaos or obstruct legitimate activities in Lagos would be firmly dealt with. “Anybody that wants to hide under violent protests to truncate the peace in Lagos or to disturb the activities of other Nigerians will not be allowed,” Jimoh stated.
The police commissioner advised anyone aggrieved by government actions to follow lawful channels of redress rather than resorting to street demonstrations. “If you have any grievances against government at whatsoever level, whether at local or state or federal, there are laid-down processes to do so. You can equally approach the court and let all the judicial processes be exhausted in the process of fighting for your rights,” he said.
Jimoh further cautioned Sowore against “hiding under criminalities,” linking recent raids in some Lagos communities to criminal activities. “So, Sowore should not hide under criminalities, if he’s not a criminal himself, to begin to sponsor people that we have raided so many areas and we have recovered a lot of incriminating evidence, including lethal weapons from those locations,” he said.
The commissioner concluded by insisting that the police would not tolerate any unlawful gatherings, stressing, “Anybody who wants to hide under criminality like Sowore and his group should know that they are complicit in conspiracy to commit mayhem in those locations… So they should stay clear and respect the law.”
