President Tinubu promised us something in his speech he has not manifested till today- Farounbi

Chief Yemi Farounbi, a former Nigerian ambassador to the Philippines and the Asiwaju of Ora-Igbomina in Osun State, has raised concerns about the growing threat of kidnapping and banditry affecting his community and neighbouring areas.

Speaking in an interview with The Nigerian Tribune, he addressed security challenges in the region alongside broader national issues.

When he was asked about recent moves by some states and communities to take care of insecurity with their own independent actions, he said that for local communities to effectively protect themselves, adequate funding is essential. This, he explained, is one of the reasons why initiatives like Amotekun have struggled to achieve full effectiveness. The force has been restricted from acquiring weapons such as AK-47s by the Federal Government, and state governments often lack the resources to equip them properly, as security provision is not formally included in the allocations they receive.

He further remarked that President Tinubu had made a commitment in a public address to restructure the nation’s security system, a promise that, in his view, has yet to be fulfilled. The president had assured Nigerians of a new security architecture and a revised security doctrine, but the measures he outlined have not yet materialized.

He argued that the responsibility now rests with the government to present legislation that reflects a comprehensive security strategy. Such a bill, he said, should clearly outline the new security framework, including provisions for adequate staffing, proper equipment, funding, and other essential resources. In his view, it is imperative that the authorities take the lead in formalizing these measures.

He said, “President Tinubu promised us something in his speech he has not manifested till today.

“He promised us on May 29, 2023 that he will give us a new security architecture, a new security doctrine such that we will be proud to sleep peacefully in Nigeria.

“He said so, but my people now cannot sleep, and those in the neighbouring towns in Kwara and Ekiti cannot sleep.”

He emphasized that the president must treat the issue of security with utmost seriousness. Otherwise, he warned, the problem could escalate to a point where effective governance of the country becomes increasingly difficult.
