Over 80 People Killed In Jos, Defence Minister Is More Focused On Helping APC Organise Convention—Sowore

‎In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to reports of mass killings in Jos, Plateau State, where more than 80 people were said to have lost their lives in overnight attacks.

‎”Overnight, more than 80 people were reportedly killed in Jos. When a nation’s Defence Minister is more focused on helping a failed ruling party like the All Progressives Congress @OfficialAPCNg organize its convention than on safeguarding lives, what outcome should citizens realistically expect?” he wrote.

‎In his post, Sowore described the incident as tragic and alarming and expressed concern over the continued loss of lives in different parts of the country, especially in regions that have experienced repeated cycles of violence, according to him, such attacks highlight the urgent need for stronger and more effective security measures.

‎Sowore criticized the leadership of Nigeria’s defence sector and questioned the priorities of top government officials, particularly the Minister of Defence, suggesting that more attention appears to be given to political activities than to the protection of citizens.

‎He specifically referenced the involvement of government figures in activities linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Sowore argued that focusing on party-related events while insecurity persists sends the wrong signal to Nigerians.

‎According to him, citizens expect the government to prioritise safety and respond swiftly to threats, he said the repeated occurrence of deadly attacks raises concerns about the effectiveness of current security strategies and added that the scale of the violence in Jos calls for urgent investigation and decisive action.

‎The activist questioned what Nigerians should realistically expect if those in charge of national security are perceived to be distracted, he warned that continued neglect of security issues could further erode public confidence in the government.
