According to The Times of Israel, In a significant move highlighting its commitment to the Palestinian cause, Indonesia’s military has announced it is preparing a substantial contingent for a potential deployment to the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to reporters, Armed Forces Chief General Agus Subiyanto confirmed that Indonesia is ready to contribute to any future United Nations peacekeeping operations in the besieged territory.
“Indonesia has prepared peacekeeping troops to be sent to Gaza to maintain the ceasefire and protect civilians, Subiyanto stated. “We are preparing 1,000 to 8,000 troops depending on the needs on the ground and the UN’s mandate.
The announcement follows Indonesia’s long-standing diplomatic push for a ceasefire and lasting peace in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. As the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel and has been one of Palestine’s most vocal supporters.
Analysts note that such a deployment would be contingent on a formal UN mandate and, critically, an agreement from all conflicting parties, a complex diplomatic hurdle given the current political landscape, any deployment would also require security guarantees for the troops on the ground.
“This readiness signal is as much a diplomatic statement as a military one, said foreign policy expert Dr. Lina Alexandra from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. “It reinforces Indonesia’s position as a proactive player in the Muslim world and on the global stage, willing to back its words with tangible resources for humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) are among the most frequent contributors to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, currently deploying over 2,500 personnel across various operations, the training and preparation of a brigade-sized force for Gaza underscores the seriousness of the offer.
