In a video shared by Symfoni TV, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to handle diplomatic relations with the United States and its president, Donald Trump, with wisdom and restraint.
Okonkwo expressed concern over what he described as a poorly managed exchange between the Nigerian president and his American counterpart following Trump’s recent remarks on Nigeria’s human rights and religious freedom situation.
Okonkwo said, “The last time I granted interview with you people I pleaded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu I said please sir be careful the way you deal with Donald Trump. You can’t wish him away. Even in your village, if you have the strongest man and he happens to be behaving in a funny way, you are still needed to use wisdom to know how to deal with him. I pleaded with him and look at Donald Trump’s first tweet designating Nigeria as a country of particular concern and then Tinubu fired his own tweets. No, you don’t do that with Donald Trump. Not that you’re scared of him. No. But you have to check the psychology of a particular leader and evolve diplomatic and wise way to follow him.”
The ADC chieftain emphasized that diplomacy requires emotional intelligence and strategic communication, particularly when dealing with world powers like the United States.
He urged President Tinubu to prioritize Nigeria’s image and international relations above personal reactions or political pride.
