Chidi Odinkalu, a Nigerian human rights lawyer and academic, has reacted to recent comments made by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), regarding the widespread deployment of military personnel across Nigeria. Odinkalu criticized Buratai’s remarks, pointing out that the militarization of internal security began under his own leadership.
In a post shared on social media X, Odinkalu expressed disbelief that Buratai would now raise concerns about the army’s presence in civilian affairs. He emphasized that it was during Buratai’s tenure as army chief that the military began to overshadow the Nigerian Police Force in handling internal security matters.
Odinkalu stated that Buratai’s current position contradicts his past actions. He argued that the retired general played a significant role in expanding the army’s involvement in domestic operations, which has since weakened the development of civilian security institutions.
Chidi said, “I am rather surprised that Tukur Buratai shd be the person complaining that @HQNigerianArmy are deployed all over #Nigeria or that they have retrenched @PoliceNG. Has he lost his mind or how does he forget that It happened under his watch as #COAS?!”
