Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent comments about Nigeria’s population growth.
Sowore argued that Obasanjo has no moral standing to lecture Nigerians on population control, given his own large family size.
Speaking during an interview with TV Platinum, Sowore reacted to Obasanjo’s remark that Nigeria’s population, if not managed by 2050, could worsen the Boko Haram crisis.
He said, “Obasanjo has no leg to stand on when we talk about population. How many kids does he have? He has kids almost a size of a city. But that’s not the issue.”
According to Sowore, population should not be viewed as a problem if a country is governed effectively.
“The issue is that population is not a barrier if a country is well governed — if there are leaders who know what they are doing. The most prosperous countries today are the ones with the highest population — China, India,” he explained.
He added that the problem arises when a country fails to invest in education and development.
“What he should have said is that if you have a huge population that is not educated and taken care of, Boko Haram will happen. Even if the population of your country is 200,000 and you have useless leaders, there will still be Boko Haram in that country,” Sowore stated.
He further noted that a well-educated and upwardly mobile population is key to prosperity.
“Nigeria has 200 million people ready to take on the rest of the world, but certain things need to be done,” he said.
Concluding, Sowore said he prefers not to discuss Obasanjo, asserting that past leaders like him failed the country.
