Obasanjo: I Was The One Who Told Thabo Mbeki, Busy And Mandela That He Was Running For 3rd Term-Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District and former Governor of Abia State, has revealed that he personally informed former world leaders, including George W. Bush, Thabo Mbeki, and Nelson Mandela, about ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s alleged attempt to secure a third term in office.

Kalu made this revelation during an interview with Channels Television while reacting to Obasanjo’s recent denial of the third-term agenda. Kalu dismissed Obasanjo’s claim as false, describing it as a naked lie. He stated that several Nigerian politicians, including former Senate President David Mark and Senator Tunde Ogbeha, are alive and can confirm the truth.

According to him, the third-term project was real and involved attempts to influence lawmakers through financial inducements. He recalled that the late Senator Uche Chukwumerije once brought a large sum of money to bribe a senator to support the bid, which he flatly rejected.

Kalu further disclosed that he took it upon himself to alert international leaders about Obasanjo’s plan, which eventually prompted diplomatic concerns.

He recounted that former presidents Thabo Mbeki and George Bush, as well as Nelson Mandela, questioned Obasanjo about the alleged third-term ambition.

Kalu insisted that leaders must be truthful about historical events, arguing that a nation cannot be built on lies or attempts to distort the past for personal or political convenience.

As he said, “Even the national security advisor now, Nuhu Ribadu, would know that Obasanjo was lying, so he was at the center of the whole thing. Personally, what was my quarrel with him?”

“Because I was the one who told former President Thabo Mbeki that he was running for a third term, I was the one who told former President Bush. I was the one who told these two presidents who called him.”
