The Senate Minority Leader and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abba Moro, has provided further insight into the internal crisis within the party, referencing disagreements among key stakeholders and a court ruling that nullified a major party convention.
Moro made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, April 9, 2026, while explaining events that contributed to leadership disputes within the PDP.
He identified tensions between prominent party figures, including Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde, as a significant factor in the crisis. According to him, “Two, it was not lost on anybody that Governor Nyesom Wike and Governor Makinde were at loggerheads as to who controls the party. That was part of the crisis.”
Moro stated that the disagreement made it difficult to achieve consensus on party decisions, particularly regarding the location and conduct of the convention. He said, “It is therefore inconceivable that very responsible party officers and leaders will say, go and hold a convention in Ibadan, which is the home state of Governor Makinde.”
He further explained that the prevailing tensions created conditions that discouraged participation from some stakeholders. Moro added, “Naturally, with the belligerence that was growing, you wouldn’t expect Governor Wike and his group to just jump into a plane and go to Ibadan to attend that convention, which eventually happened. And so that is how we were in PDP.”
The senator also referenced legal proceedings that followed the convention, noting that the matter was taken to the Court of Appeal for determination. He stated, “Eventually, appeal was made to the appeal court, and appeal court said, look, the convention in Ibadan was held against a subsistence court order not to hold.”
Moro explained that the ruling invalidated both the convention and the leadership outcomes that emerged from it. He said, “And therefore, it was null and void.
