A heated disagreement over a football match in the Shasha axis of Lagos recently spiraled out of control, leaving a member of the Nigerian Air Force with stab wounds and throwing the Oremeji neighborhood into chaos. What began as a clash between the off-duty officer and some local youths quickly degenerated into a violent altercation. The unsettling episode highlights how minor confrontations can turn explosive in crowded communities, ending with the officer injured and security forces storming the area.
As reported by Punch on November 18, 2025, a witness identified as Baba described how the trouble started. According to him, “A scuffle erupted, and one of the boys snatched the knife and stabbed him.” This followed claims that the officer had earlier pulled out a knife after attempting to confiscate the ball and rough-handle a teenager, escalating what was initially a small dispute into a dangerous encounter.
The stabbing prompted immediate retaliation as Air Force operatives stormed Shasha in search of those involved. Locals like Sola recounted how uniformed men went from street to street, assaulting residents and carrying out broad searches for the suspected boy and his relatives. Their forceful presence terrified the community, leaving many law-abiding inhabitants feeling targeted despite having no connection to the incident.
Fear continued to grip Shasha and nearby Orisumbare, severely disrupting daily business activities. Shopkeepers, including Eniola, said they had no choice but to shut their stalls much earlier than normal because officers kept returning to harass and indiscriminately arrest people. Adding to the fear, Esther Komolafe said that soldiers even launched tear gas during one of their return operations, making certain areas unsafe once evening approached.
Contrary to circulating rumours, the Lagos State Police Command clarified through spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi that the Air Force officer survived the attack and was treated. Adebisi explained that the DPO and local leaders intervened when soldiers attempted to retaliate, helping to calm the tension. Still, the episode marks yet another disturbing encounter between security agents and civilians within Lagos.
Hear him speak: “Nobody knew he was an officer. He tried to seize the ball and beat the boy who kicked it. People begged him, but he punched the boy, and others around tried to restrain him from causing more harm.”
