According to a report by Punch on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Prof. Lai Olurode, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged the Federal Government to act carefully in its dealings with the United States.
He made the call following the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and comments from President Donald Trump.
Olurode said Nigeria should respond with diplomacy rather than emotional reactions or defensive patriotism.
He warned that confronting the U.S. recklessly could be dangerous, describing it as “suicidal to walk into America’s death trap.”
He noted that Trump could even be upset by the truth, emphasizing the need for caution in all official responses.
The former professor of Sociology at the University of Lagos suggested that the Nigerian government show decorum and respect.
He said President Bola Tinubu’s administration should avoid turning Nigeria into “a theatre of war” through aggressive or hasty reactions.
Olurode also called on Nigeria’s elites to set aside differences and unite behind the government.
He stressed that national solidarity is essential for the country’s survival, warning that if Nigeria falters, it would jeopardize the nation’s development and the pursuit of its diverse goals.
He praised the government’s current approach, noting that it has acted with caution and awareness of the country’s vulnerability.
“In his response to Mr Trump’s provocative moves, President Tinubu’s government should display decorum.
There seems to be no country that can stop America. We should be diplomatic rather than being emotional or displaying morbid patriotism. President Trump can be angry with even the truth. It is suicidal to walk into America’s death trap,” he said.
