The legal battle over the conviction of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has taken a dramatic turn with claims of internal judicial support for the appeal effort. Barrister Maxwell Opara’s revelation suggests a significant level of private concern within Nigeria’s highest courts regarding the controversial judgment, indicating that the legal scrutiny of the case may be widening considerably.
According to a video posted on the Official YouTube channel of TV Platinum, while detailing the legal activities, Barrister Maxwell Opara stated that, “Five serving judges, Supreme Court and Appeal Court, have taken this upon themselves, they had written grounds of appeal and sent to us.” He expressed surprise, noting that this unusual level of voluntary assistance suggests the ruling has deeply unsettled members of the judiciary.
Opara elaborated that this aid is not limited to serving judges, as retired jurists and law professors both locally and abroad are reportedly contributing to the legal research for Kanu’s appeal. He interprets this groundswell of unsolicited support as confirmation that the conviction is considered by many in the legal fraternity to be fundamentally questionable or flawed, leading to an organized legal pushback.
The lawyer emphasized that the defense team sees this development as a “blessing in disguise,” demonstrating that there are still judges with conscience actively involved in the system. This external, high-level backing is expected to bolster the formal appeal process, potentially giving the arguments presented before the appellate courts greater weight and credibility during the proceedings.
