According to a report by Leadership News on Friday, November 28, 2025, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former Labour Party vice presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a nationwide state of emergency on security, describing the action as misdirected and lacking effectiveness.
Baba-Ahmed expressed his views during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Thursday, emphasizing that the measures outlined by the President do not tackle the root causes of insecurity in the country.
He suggested that the declaration focuses on superficial responses rather than addressing systemic problems.
Baba-Ahmed highlighted that Nigeria’s security challenges are deeply rooted in political, social, and economic issues that have been neglected over the years.
He sad that simply imposing emergency measures cannot resolve issues such as weak institutions, corruption, and the lack of accountability among political leaders.
According to him, these structural problems have created an environment in which insecurity continues to thrive despite government interventions.
He further stated that the country remains in a fragile and dangerous condition, warning that continued inaction and political mismanagement could exacerbate the situation.
Baba-Ahmed accused political actors of supporting what he described as an incompetent government, which he claims has failed to implement effective policies to safeguard citizens.
He stressed that leadership failures have contributed significantly to the worsening insecurity and that urgent reforms are needed to stabilize the country.
Baba-Ahmed also criticized the President’s administration for its inability to fulfill promises made to Nigerians.
He emphasized that citizens are experiencing the consequences of a government that, in his view, lacks capacity and direction.
The former vice presidential candidate noted that without strategic planning and proper execution of policies, emergency declarations alone would not improve security across the nation.
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed concluded by emphasizing that the Tinubu government is in a weak position and that its current approach is insufficient to resolve the nation’s security challenges.
He said that the state of emergency on security, as it stands, fails to address the fundamental problems and does not provide a clear path toward lasting solutions.
He warned that without significant reforms and competent leadership, Nigeria’s security and political stability remain at risk.
He said: “This Tinubu government is so weak; they’re in a very bad situation.
“Nigerians, Obi, Atiku, everyone, see what we have done to ourselves, allowing Tinubu and Shettima to ruin our country. You have brought in an incompetent government that is incapable of fulfilling their promises.”
