Nigeria Spends Too Much On The North; If We Can’t Solve It, Others From The South Won’t Fix It-Gebi

In a recent video shared by Voice TV Nigeria, Intelligence and Governance Expert, Honourable Aliyu Gebi, delivered a blunt assessment of the challenges confronting Northern Nigeria, urging leaders and citizens of the region to embrace self-reflection and responsibility.

Speaking during a public forum, Gebi argued that the North must stop externalizing its problems and instead focus on internal reforms, particularly at the sub national level. He stated emphatically, “Nigeria is squandering too much money on northern Nigeria, and if northerners cannot solve their problem, is it somebody from the west, southwest or from the southeast or from the south south that will come and solve our problem.”

According to him, the persistent security, governance, and development challenges in the region cannot be resolved through federal dependence or political bargaining for power at the center. He stressed that real progress begins with accountable leadership at the state and local government levels, where policies directly affect citizens’ daily lives.

Gebi further criticized what he described as a culture of political entitlement among some northern elites, noting that leadership should be viewed as service rather than control. He maintained that many of the region’s crises, including insecurity and social instability, are rooted in exclusion, poor governance, and the failure to treat citizens as equal stakeholders in governance.

The intelligence expert called for a shift in priorities away from presidential politics toward grassroots development, inclusive governance, and responsible leadership. He emphasized that unless northerners collectively confront their internal challenges, national unity and sustainable development will remain difficult to achieve.
