Nigeria Made a Mistake Allowing the US Involvement; It Will Turn Our Land Into a Theatre of War—Gumi

Islamic scholar Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has criticized Nigeria’s reported security cooperation with the United States, warning that foreign military involvement could worsen insecurity rather than resolve it. In a strongly worded Facebook post, Gumi argued that Nigeria “made a mistake allowing the US involvement,” insisting that such actions risk transforming the country into a “theatre of war.”

According to Gumi, the presence or intervention of a global military power like the United States often attracts hostile counterforces. He warned that rather than eliminating terrorism, U.S. involvement could draw anti-American militant groups into Nigeria, thereby internationalizing what should remain a domestic security challenge. In his view, this escalation would expose civilians to greater danger and prolong instability across already fragile regions.

Gumi also raised concerns about national sovereignty. He argued that allowing foreign powers to operate militarily within Nigeria undermines the country’s independence and decision-making authority. Framing the issue as both political and moral, he cautioned that external intervention often comes with hidden agendas that may not align with Nigeria’s long-term interests. He stressed that Nigerians should be wary of narratives used to justify such involvement, especially when couched in religious or humanitarian terms.

Another key aspect of Gumi’s argument focused on tactics. He dismissed airstrikes and limited foreign military actions as ineffective against deeply rooted terror networks. According to him, “dropping a few bombs” cannot address the structural and social foundations of terrorism. Instead, he called for serious, coordinated efforts on the ground, led by Nigerians who understand local dynamics, terrain, and community structures.

Gumi further insisted that Nigeria has sufficient manpower and resources to confront its security challenges internally if there is genuine political will. He urged authorities to invest in intelligence, local engagement, and accountability rather than relying on external forces.
