Former Brigade Commander in Operation Lafiya Dole (North East), Yahaya Lakale, has disclosed that there was no active security team on ground at the Kasuwan Daji Market in Niger State, where a recent attack by suspected terrorists took place.
In an interview with Channels Television, he revealed that 55 dead bodies had been counted as of 10 a.m. on Sunday, following the devastating attack. Lakale explained that he insisted the exact number of casualties from the tragic incident be properly ascertained before any burial could take place.
He said: “That place is a flash point in terms of activities of bandits and terrorists and unfortunately, that is an area that is left with little or no security presence at all over the years.
“Several narratives have been coming up and people are bringing a lot of informations but I can tell you for free that as at 10:00 yesterday morning, we counted 55 dead bodies. I personally told them not to bury them until they are counted, until we take records, videos, pictures, and the rest of them.”
Furthermore, he pointed out that the affected community in Niger State has been without any meaningful security presence for a long period.
He also revealed that Papiri village, where schoolchildren were previously kidnapped by suspected bandits, and the Kasuwan Daji Market, where the recent killings occurred, are located close to each other in Niger State.
His words: “The papiri village where the kidnapping of school children took place and Kasuwan Daji is just a stone throw. It is just a journey of 20 minutes drive but Kasuwan Daji happen to be in Borgu Local Government.
