Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has drawn attention to the prevalence of political flattery during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, October 26, 2025, speaking at the 2nd Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in Abuja, Sule noted that many politicians praised Buhari excessively while he was in office but turned critical once he left.
“I have seen people actually sit in the presence of President (Muhammadu) Buhari to tell him, ‘Oh, you are the best ever. Nobody can do this better.’ But the minute Buhari left government, they started saying, ‘Oh, he was one of the worst presidents we have ever seen'” the governor said.
He described this behaviour as a classic example of sycophancy that undermines effective governance.
Sule shared from his own experience as a governor, observing that such insincerity can distort decision-making and prevent leaders from receiving honest advice.
He highlighted the contrast between public praise and private criticism as a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s political space.
The lecture also celebrated the late media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, acknowledging his pioneering role in establishing Nigeria’s first private radio and television stations during the military era.
Sule commended Dokpesi’s courage to speak truth to power under restrictive conditions and emphasized the lasting impact of his contributions to the media industry.
