Muslims Worldwide Often Face Institutional Discrimination, Socio-economic Exclusion —Guterres Speaks

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has renewed his call for global action against discrimination targeting Muslims, urging governments and societies to uphold equality and protect religious freedom.

In a message shared on his verified social media account to mark the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Guterres said Muslims in many parts of the world continue to face serious challenges, including systemic discrimination and social exclusion.

According to him, anti-Muslim prejudice manifests in several forms, ranging from unfair immigration policies to heightened surveillance and profiling of Muslim communities.

“Muslims worldwide often face institutional discrimination, socio-economic exclusion, biased immigration policies and unwarranted surveillance and profiling,” the UN chief stated.

Guterres said such practices undermine the fundamental principles of equality and human rights that the international community has pledged to uphold.

He called on governments, institutions, and individuals to take stronger action against Islamophobia and other forms of religious intolerance, stressing that discrimination against any group threatens the dignity and rights of all people.

“This International Day to Combat Islamophobia, let’s recommit to the equality, human rights and dignity of every person, no matter their faith,” he added.

The International Day to Combat Islamophobia was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about prejudice and hostility faced by Muslims globally and to promote efforts aimed at fostering tolerance and mutual respect among different religious communities.
