Murtala: ‘His Mother Was An Hausa But His Father Was An Edo Man And He Did Identified With Us’ -Oroh

Former House of Representatives member Abdul Oroh has alleged that the late Nigerian military leader General Murtala Mohammed was of Edo origin by birth, and not a northerner in the way that history has generally portrayed him.

Speaking in an interview with Edmund Obilo, Oroh said, “The Midwest was liberated by troops led by Murtala Mohammed, whose family came from that part of the country. I asked his son once if he truly was from Edo State, he said, ‘What is the difference between Auchi and Kano?’ So he was not a Fulani. His father was an Edo man and he identified with us. When he took over, he went to perform some traditional rites with some of the traditional rulers from Edo,” he said.

Oroh added that there were credible reports suggesting Murtala had made efforts to protect officers from the Midwest during politically charged moments within the military.

He also pointed to the naming of Murtala Square in Benin City as a tribute that had never been contested or denied by anyone, including the Mohammed family….See More
