Coates made the claim during an interview on Fox Business on Monday, March 9, 2026, while discussing the leadership transition in Iran following the death of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

According to the Heritage Foundation official, reports about Mojtaba Khamenei’s wealth and overseas assets could further fuel public anger inside Iran.

Coates argued that perceptions of corruption among political elites have historically contributed to unrest in Iran, where protests have periodically erupted over economic conditions and political restrictions.

The national security analyst said such issues could intensify scrutiny of the new leadership as the country navigates a period of heightened political tension and regional conflict.

Her remarks came as Iran faces increased international attention following the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader and amid continuing military confrontations involving Iran and its regional adversaries…..See More
